Johannes Vermeer, View of Delft

Undoubtedly, it’s one of painting’s jewels. Although, to be more precise, all of Vermeer’s paintings are jewels.

“View of Delft” is a rarity in his uncertain list of works: along with “The little Street”, it’s the only outdoor painting. We know him for his indoor women, immersed in a dimly lit atmosphere, in their daily tasks, or for his characters related to world of music.

Maybe this is why a friend told me, while talking about this painter (God knows why we ended up talking about him...) that she did not know these 2 “outdoor” works by Vermeer. In honor of our friendship, here’s the analysis on this painting.
